Research fields :

Zeina received a bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering in 2013 from the American University of Sharjah. During her undergraduate studies, she did an internship as a process engineer in a petroleum refinery. As a design project, she worked on the design of microbial desalination cells.

Her PhD project, supervised by Prof. Viviane Yargeau, McGill University, and co-supervised by Prof. Peter Vanrolleghem, Université Laval, is funded by an NSERC Strategic Project. The main objective of her PhD project is to measure and then predict the fate of contaminants of emerging concern, including illicit drugs, pharmaceuticals and hormones, in wastewater treatment plants. This work will provide a better understanding of the mechanisms of removal of these contaminants and, by integrating experimental results obtained using advanced sampling strategies with the mathematical modelling, provide a tool to optimize treatment strategies.
