Projects :
Integrating river ecohydraulics in urban stormwater management

Research fields :

Urbanization is growing, and with that comes increased imperviousness of the watersheds. During rain events, runoff also increases and drains to the river a significant amount of pollutants, such as suspended solids, heavy metals, nutrients and pathogens. To limit the impacts of the runoff on the hydraulic of the river, stormwater detention basins have been built. Today, these ponds are not managed and have only a small effect on the water quality. The use of a controlled valve to control these ponds would increase the retention time in the basin and promotes settling of particles and associated pollutants. The goal of this research project was to create a model able to simulate the collection and the treatment of the runoff using the softwares SWMM (Storm Water Management Model, US Environmental Protection Agency) and WEST (MOSTforWATER, Kortrijk, Belgium). This model allowed defining control rules for the downstream valve. The stormwater discharges will therefore be managed according to weather forecasts and their anticipated effects on the water quality of the downstream river.
