Projects :
Micropollutants

Research fields :

Due to various urban activities, substances like heavy metals and PAHs from traffic, PAHs from wood burning in fireplaces, pesticides from pest and weed abatement (e.g. DEHP), nonylphenols and pesticides from building materials have the potential to end up in stormwater.

The aim of Hans-Christian's research stay was to investigate selected micropollutants' sorption to various particle sizes and to what extent these particles are occurring in and transported with stormwater. To what extent will the stormwater collected in a pond be cleaned, if the particles are allowed to settle before the water is released to the receiving compartment?

By using the ViCaS test method established in the modelEAU laboratory, the aim was to separate the stormwater transported particles depending on their settling velocities. Furthermore, the aim was to analyse these sediment fractions for their contents of micropollutants.

A selection of the above mentioned substances has been made.

In addition, the aim of the stay was also to get familiar with modeling principles and the use of models.
