Giulia has a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental engineering from the University of Cagliari (Italy). She wrote her master’s thesis at Ghent University (Faculty of Bioscience Engineering) on the effects of nitrite on the P-uptake activity of phosphate accumulating organisms from SBR and MBR reactors. Afterwards, she did an internship on process control in a wastewater activated sludge purification plant (Tecnocasic, Cagliari, Italia), and another one as a laboratory assistant.
Giulia joined the modelEAU team in 2009 as a PhD student. Her work fits into the primEAU project that aims at improving our knowledge of the primary clarification process, which is often taken for granted, thus not encouraging further research and efforts. The objective is to use emerging knowledge to develop a new 1-D dynamic model describing primary clarification which can be easily coupled with the traditional modelling approach of activated sludge proposed by IWA (ASM/ADM).
