Retention tanks

Due to the constant increase of impervious urban areas, the optimal use of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) is becoming a priority issue in many cities across North America and Europe. Within the framework of its environmental quality management, Quebec City built 14 retention tanks along the Saint-Charles and Saint-Lawrence rivers in order to reduce intermittent spilling and to improve the receiving water quality. Within the context of integrated urban wastewater management knowledge gaps still exist on the optimal operation of these structures in view of an overall improvement of the environment. This lack of insight and optimization is due to the complexity and the multidisciplinary nature of this problem. First, the retEAU project aims to improve the knowledge about the pollutant behavior in retention tanks by conducting intense in-situ observations. Second, it will develop a model which will be calibrated and validated with observed data from a full-scale retention tank. These improvements should lead to a better understanding and to the development of new optimal operating rules for retention tanks in the context of integrated urban wastewater management.
