Integrating river ecohydraulics in urban stormwater management

Urbanization increases the imperviousness of watersheds with detrimental consequences for the receiving waters. The increased runoff during rain events causes hydraulic stress leading to riverbed erosion with negative ecological consequences. The increased suspended solid loads and associated pollutants decrease water quality and can cause loss of uses (swimming, fishing, etc.). Detention ponds have been built to reduce the hydraulic impact but there is currently a limited range of solutions to improve the quality of water discharged. The rivEAU project aims to study the implementation of controlled outlets for these basins in order to increase the retention time and allow the particles to settle. Also, the controlled outlet could allow emptying the basins with an optimal flow rate to limit the erosion of the river. To determine the control rules that have to be implemented to achieve these goals, an integrated model is developed taking into account the water quality of the river, weather forecasts and the water quality in the retrofitted detention pond.
