Ruyi obtained her bachelor's degree in environmental engineering and master's degree in biological chemistry at theZhejiang Gongshang University in China. She started a PhD study in 2010 at Tongji University, China.

Ruyi was working on the phosphorus release and impact in anaerobic digestion with P-rich sludge and its modeling. Modeling a WWTP that includes phosphorus removal and anaerobic digestion was also a part of her work.
